Kununurra to Home Valley Station

As Kununurra was the last place with relatively cheap fuel ($1.89 per litre), it was time to fill up the tanks and the Jerry cans. On the weekend Coles supermarket had a deal where they gave 20c a litre discount if you spent $100 or more in one transaction. Easy to do when you've let supplies run down because of border crossing restrictions.

Ever since we began planning this Ozzie Adventure, Brandt has been avidly researching the Gibb River Road. Today, Friday 26th July, his dream is becoming a reality.

We had heard all sorts of stories about the condition of this road and now we were about to find out for ourselves. The tar seal extended about 50km to the turn off to El Questro Resort. Then we were back on the gravel roads with their corrugation and dust.
First river crossing - the Pentecost River. Cockburn Ranges in the background are hazy because of smoke from burning off. (have since been told that the fires were lit by a camper)

We stayed down by the river at Homevalley Homestead.

As I said previously, the scenery was marred by the smoke from the fires near El Questro.

The river is tidal and has a large flow. At dusk, the cattle come to drink and some get stuck in the mud.

The above warning sign amused me. It is right by the boat ramp. One line says "do not enter the water". I was wondering how it was possible to launch and retrieve a boat without entering the water.

On our second night the smoke haze had lifted and we got some stunning colours on the river.
