Red cliffs to Broken Hill

The first town we came to was Wentworth, the place where the Murray and the Darling rivers meet.

So, of course we went to the lookout points.

One of the first things to take my attention was the plantings on the banks. The plaque tells about the Fergie and how it helped save the town in the 1956 floods.

Quite clever planting I thought.

From Wentworth we drove on for an hour or so and picked a nice spot on the side of the road to set up camp for the night.
One of the first things Brandt did was to collect wood and set up a fire in his new fire pit

The plate from the BBQ fitted over perfectly, so his part of dinner was cooked over the flames.
The billy made its reappearance and water was heated for cups of tea, dishes and hot water bottle.

Next day on to Pooncarie where we stopped for a wander round and a cup of coffee.

We had heard that the Darling had almost stopped flowing. It is definitely very low. The tree roots are high and dry.

It is almost unbelievable to think that the river was in flood a couple of years ago.

It broke the banks on the Western side and rose to a meter above. We wondered if the boat hung in the trees was there as a reminder of how high the water had come.

At Pooncarie we learnt that the road north from there was closed and not wanting to incur a heavy fine for being on a closed road we retraced our steps to Wentworth and took the route on the Silver Highway.

We certainly took our time in getting to Broken Hill, with two overnight stops in free camps , the first about 60 km north of Wentworth

and the second 137 km south of Broken Hill.
It was here that we were joined by a couple who had done lots of off road trips around Australia. They were very interesting to talk to.

The sign on the tree was not one that was welcome to a person allergic to bee stings and who had not yet got round to updating her antihistamine tablets.
(The ones from the beginning of our travels were well past their use by date. )

And so a leisurely stroll to Broken Hill.
